Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz “pulls out all the stops” (Publishers Weekly) in this haunting psychological thriller...

For thirty-five years, Bruno Frye has lived in the shadow of the adopted mother who made his heart beat with constant fear. And even though she died five years ago, the whispers still haunt him in the dark...enough to make him kill - and kill again.

Hilary Thomas is one of his intended victims. And she’s about to learn that even death can’t keep a bad man down...

Good book, some interesting twists in the story but that is a trademark of the author. The suspense, horror and mystery that Koontz fans expect is all here. So far as I?m aware this is the only Dean Koontz novel released as a movie, I can?t say the adaptation was good at all and really didn?t like the film, but the book is great!

A good listen story but...you will have to suffer through some toe-curling sex descriptions (pink flowers, turgid nipples, his hardness, etc). In addition Dean Koontz is unfortunately unable to be subtle with his characters - if a character likes to paint - they are suddenly THE ONE AND ONLY AMAZINGLY TALENTED undiscovered artist EVER. If a character had a tough upbringing - not only was it THE WORST CHILDHOOD ever but they also find a reason to bring it up in virtually every situation to the point of teeth wrenching annoyance. He is also guilty of the American authors habit of being European pretentiouness - especially with Italian food - which is always found in THE BEST UNDISCOVERED BUT SMALL AND COSY AND WARM AND PERFECTLY AUTHENTIC ITALIAN RESTAURANT ever, which is obviously run by a friend of one of the main characters (who is always very generous with his/her PARM-E-ZHAAAN 'shavings'). Take it as a given that the wine compliments the food perfectly (and is never drunk, always... savoured) and the meal will always be gratis (but the AMAZING ARTIST CHARACTER will promise an INCREDIBLY WELL EXECUTED oil colour as a gift to say 'Tar'). In the same way John Grisham is guilty of shoe-horning Italy in to everything he can as well - just so he can rattle on about RICH DARK THICK SWEET COFFEE, PERFECTLY AL-DENTE PASSST-TAH and of course PARM-E-ZHAAAN SHAVINGS not grated, but SHAVINGS (of a brick sized block of cheese by the way, of course).

But...

If you get past that it's a very good and gripping listen equal parts horror, disgust and psycho nasty business. I nearly stopped listening at the first bedroom/sex scene. I am glad I did not.

A good listen story but...

Because it’s quite dated I won’t lay too heavy on the fact it was quite misogynistic and the detailing of the women was not needed to give that picture in your mind of what was happening. Over all a good story but He’s done much better.

A bit drawn out but glad I stuck at it

I loved this story, but the performance by William Dufris is the best performance I have ever heard on an audible book. He brought the characters to life and I forgot I was listening to one man read the book. Absolutely fantastic.

That performer. Wow
