About this listen

We join the action just as our ‘hero’ Tom, (early thirties, reads the ‘news’ on the radio) finds out that his girlfriend has NOT left him.

Tom,

I have not left you. But I am gone.
Please carry on as normal.
Love always,

Hayley

Has Hayley gone or hasn’t she? Is she coming back? If she has gone, but is coming back, when is she coming back? And what is he supposed to bloody do in the meantime?

And what if she’s never coming back??

Trying to work out what’s happening to his confusing life, Tom tries to track Hayley down. In doing so, he stumbles across a strange and eccentric group of people with an irregular and highly-addictive hobby.

Next, he’s being followed, but he’s not sure by whom. And then he also almost loses his job at the radio station in the now infamous ‘Jam Nazi’ episode, which of course, you know about.

Above all, Tom is trying to work out who everyone is.

Because who is Hayley? Who is this new girl following him around the supermarket?

And who, for that matter, is TOM DITTO?

Critic reviews

An air of mystery and of a past being reconstructed, with a booster shot of comedy…As you would expect from the author of Awkward Situations for Men, the toe-curling embarrassment of much of Tom’s life is well realised
Who is Tom Ditto? is Danny Wallace at his very best: funny, assured and relentlessly clever. A brilliant novel (John Niven)
It’s funny, witty, clever, good-natured – one of those purely enjoyable books you pick up with pleasure and put down with regret. It won’t change your life, but it will brighten it up for a while.
This is a terrific novel…The plot is wild and unexpected, with a dash of sinister, and it’s incredibly funny
This mystery, written by TV funny man Danny Wallace, will leave you completely mesmerised
Danny is as hilarious as ever
Wallace has scored another hit with this quirky novel…Packed full of gags, this is also a tender and touching story
Tremendous. A wonderfully well-observed and beguiling novel – shrewd, funny and stealthily profound (WILLIAM BOYD)
The brilliant author is back with this hilarious, sharp new novel
Wallace is adept at capturing the nuances of the mundane and the ridiculous, while being incredibly funny. 4 stars

What a refreshing read. Unusual story line with everyday people who experience a unique way of dealing with their own personal issues. Narration was extremely well done and I shall look for more books with these readers.

BRILLIANT

Having read the other reviews I can understand why some people found it a little dull - but if you stick with it, then the plot does develope. And yes the main character may seen a little "soppy" but I had already enjoyed hearing Kobna Holdbrook-Smith reading other audiobooks and so felt a warmth for his character. The book has such an unusual storyline that I found it compelling reading, and there is a lot of gentle humour. Overall I would say that it is not to everyone's liking, but that it certainly was to mine.

Wow, a very unusual story brilliantly told.

Slow to get in to. I nearly didn't return two or three times. I'm glad I persevered though, as its not until the end that I felt any sort of real empathy with the characters. The secrets Pia kept were worth waiting for.

If only the whole book was as good as the ending!
