About this listen

In 1976, Francis Beaumont spirited 11-year-old Kim Chown and her brother away from their mother to Africa, where he had taken a job as a university lecturer. There, behind a veneer of respectability, he terrorised and brutalised his own child, Kim, sexually and emotionally abusing her several times a day.

Only aged 20 did Kim feel able to escape from him, descending into alcoholism, after her siblings and mother refused to help her seek justice. But after almost ending her own life, Kim fought back. With the support of her husband and adult children, she finally faced him in court and won justice for his shocking crimes.

This is one woman's inspiring true story of overcoming harrowing abuse to build a happy life - against all odds.

Found this profoundly eye opening, outstanding bravery in not only living through this but also being able latterly to share the awful experiences in this book.

Brave Heart

I listened to this story with utter shock and horror at the betrayal of a father to his daughter and then her siblings denying her their support. Clearly the siblings were so taken under his"spell" that it was easier just to ignore the truth, that was so clear for them to see. Kim is the bravest person ever to have had the strength to pursue justice. May she gain strength in the bosom of her husband and children, which she so deserves.

Inspiring, bravery through such adversity.

A very good book. I enjoyed listening to this book. It’s sad, traumatic and emotional. A book on survival and finally justice.

Saw this lady's story in the daily mail so decided to sign up for audible free trial to listen. It was very well-read and the story, although terrible, was gripping. Awful to think this isn't fiction.

My first audio book. Very good
