About this listen

Why Not U.S.? Steal the Good Stuff—Better Pay, Saner Schedules, Safer Worksites, Calmer Schools—Real Fixes for Workers and Families is for anyone who’s felt the daily math doesn’t work: a nurse expected to clock in before childcare opens, a parent trapped between school hours and shift work, or a family one surprise bill away from chaos. Avery Hartwell translates policy into plain English—no partisan shouting, no academic fog—so you can actually see how real solutions could land in your town, your workplace, and your kid’s classroom.

This audiobook is a global “field guide” to places that have tried practical fixes—and it gives you tools to pressure-test them at home. You’ll explore what’s working (and what isn’t) across:

  • Pay and wage protection (including wage theft)
  • Time and scheduling (leave, predictability, the right to disconnect)
  • Skills to good jobs (training and apprenticeships that pay off)
  • Family supports (childcare that works; schools that teach and feed)
  • Systems that don’t ruin you (healthcare costs; justice and re-entry)

What makes it unusually usable: side-by-side snapshots and “Could this work here?” checklists built for union meetings, PTA conversations, city halls—or a kitchen-table debate.

And it doesn’t leave you inspired-but-stuck. It shows how change actually starts: pick one daily friction point, gather a few allies, draft a one-page pilot, start small, track results, and share what you learn. Less doomscrolling, more doable.

You won’t be asked to join a party—you’ll be invited to ask a better question: If other places have made everyday life fairer and saner, why not us?

I picked this up expecting a rant, but it felt more like a practical wake-up call. It lays out examples from other places in a way that makes you question why certain systems haven’t improved. I appreciated that it focuses on workable ideas instead of just complaints. It left me thinking more critically about work, school, and what families actually need to thrive.

Deciding where you want to live is not easy, given the proliferation of various countries' updated laws and policies to make themselves lifestyle-friendly. The author does a great job walking you through the maze so you can decide without the stress of having to do mountains of research. A helpful and entertaining audiobook that will open your eyes to what you otherwise would not have known as easily.

This was an engaging listen that kept me thinking well after each section. The way everything is organized makes the ideas easy to follow without feeling overwhelming. I liked how it connected big-picture issues to real-life situations people deal with every day. I listened during a couple longer drives and found myself replaying parts just to catch details I’d missed. It felt grounded and realistic, and it pushed me to think more carefully about changes that could actually make life better for families.

Now that I am retired I often look back at the stress that shaped my life. I served in the Marines and later spent years teaching. I did not drink or smoke before the military, but the pressure of the job slowly turned drinking after work into a routine way to cope. Looking back, I realize I was pushing down stress rather than dealing with it. Before retirement I faced cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and pre diabetes. At one point I was living with very little expectation about tomorrow.

Listening to this audiobook made me reflect on how work systems can affect health, families, and long term well being. The ideas shared pushed me to think about how things could be structured differently so people do not burn out along the way.
The narrator delivered the material in a steady and thoughtful tone that kept me engaged. The pacing made complex ideas easy to follow and gave the discussion a calm and reflective feel.
