Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Second to none in her ability to make detective stories, Georgette Heyer is queen of the genre.

It is a complete mystery why anyone would choose to murder the trusted old butler of Norton Manor. Barrister turned amateur detective, Frank Amberley, has reason to suspect that the shooting involves the nervy young lady discovered at the scene of the crime, a snooping gentleman in the halls of Greythorne and then a second dead body. A dramatic tale of upstairs, downstairs and family secrets.

Critic reviews

Praise for Georgette Heyer's mystery novels:
'We had better start ranking Heyer alongside such incomparable whodunit authors as Christie, Marsh, Tey and Allingham'
'Rarely have we seen humour and mystery so perfectly blended'
'Sharp, clear and witty'
'Heyer's characters and dialogue are an abiding delight to me ... I have seldom met people to whom I have taken so violent a fancy from the word "Go"'
'The wittiest of detective writers'

Maybe it's because I haven't read this book for a while, but listening to it now the plot did seem a bit convoluted. I could cheerfully have shaken quite a few of the characters, no actually make that most of them. But for all that I did enjoy it.

Good, if a little convoluted

Georgette Heyer’s usual excellent characterisation but not her best story and neither the hero nor the heroine really likeable. Matt Addis is a brilliant narrator though and perfectly brings the characters to life making this a very enjoyable listen.

Good story, great narration

Having thoroughly enjoyed Matt Addis' narration of a Sophia Holloway novel, I searched for other titles read by him and found this series of Georgette Hayer detective novels. I have read all of Hayer's novels in the past & her books are firm favourites. However, for me, this makes performance by the narrator of a book crucial. Listening to a familiar friend being badly performed is torture . I purchased the first in the series hoping it would live up to expectations. And it did. I have now listened to the whole series & Matt Addis did a wonderful job, even for the female voices. He really captures the essence of the characters. I hope he reads the rest of Hayer's book as I have avoided most of them previously due to dislike of the narrator of the only one I had tried before this series.

Wonderful performance of an old favourite.
