'The kind of book that has you screaming "Yes! Yes! Yes! Now I get it!" on almost every page' Caitlin Moran

'Dr Taylor sets out a compelling case . . . gives voice and agency to women who have experienced trauma and violence' Morning Star

She asked for it. She was flirting. She was drinking. She was wearing a revealing dress. She was too confident. She walked home alone. She stayed in that relationship. She was naïve. She didn't report soon enough. She didn't fight back. She wanted it. She lied about it. She comes from a bad area. She was vulnerable. She should have known. She should have seen it coming. She should have protected herself.

The victim blaming of women is prevalent and normalised in society both in the UK, and around the world.

What is it that causes us to blame women who have been abused, raped, trafficked, assaulted or harassed by men? Why are we uncomfortable with placing all of the blame on the perpetrators for their crimes against women and girls?

Based on three years of doctoral research and ten years of practice with women and girls, Dr Jessica Taylor explores the many reasons we blame women for male violence committed against them. Written in her unique style and backed up by decades of evidence, this book exposes the powerful forces in society and individual psychology which compel us to blame women subjected to male violence.©2020 VictimFocus and Dr Jessica Taylor

Dr Taylor sets out a compelling case . . . gives voice and agency to women who have experienced trauma and violence
The kind of book that has you screaming "Yes! Yes! Yes! Now I get it!" on almost every page
Not an easy read from a fella's perspective but nor should it be. Using countless, often shocking case histories as well as her own expert analysis, Dr Jessica Taylor seeks time and again to prove the inherent truth of her thesis. Does she succeed? Put it this way: months later, Dr Taylor's words still haunt me . . .

Incredibly well researched as always- but Dr Taylor never has a choice about this! This book is a painful listen for those that have their pain and societal bias confirmed, whilst having to challenge their internal narratives that have supported both their survival and contributed to further distress and suffering. The conformation of women being blamed for everything including S.A is not comforting but at least and finally women have a credible reference source as our own experience is anecdotal and counts for nothing in a so called rational 'debate' about victim blaming and conformation bias. Im physically exhausted from the listen- but a little stronger mentally for the experience.

Dr Jessica Taylor is a SHERO when it comes to highlighting the hidden and ignored pandemic that is male violence. She talks from personal and professional experience and it is clear how passionate she is for educating the world about the abuse women and girls suffer from men. She demonstrates well how women and girls are blamed for male violence by friends, family and the systems around them. This is not just a feminist issue, it's an issue we all need to acknowledge, admit and work hard to end. Thanks Dr Jessica Taylor!

An essential read (or listen)!

Amazing book by Dr. Jessica, I’ve attended few of your sessions about the book. My only critic is that the book is heavy with numbers and stats which is good as it’s a research but it makes the book very dry and emotional-less. Overall amazing book, thank you very much for sharing your work with us.

Amazing book but…

This was the second of Dr Jessica Taylors book I read after enjoying her 'Sexy but Psycho'. Once you read these books you will never again accept without question the misogynistic narrative against women which is so prevalent in our world. The complexities of victim blaming are clearly explained and articulated. I would highly recommend this book and have already gifted to friends. The author truly wants to help and empower women through real change.

I purchased this book because the title intrigued me. What I heard was a patriarchal misogynistic society, built historically from biblical times to modern day that does everything but blame itself. As a victim of childhood and adult sexual abuse, I saw similarity with the information as to how I had blamed myself for my abuse.
I agree that it's time society all over the world stops treating women as submissive, dainty, toys that are there only for male pleasure.
The fact that sexual abuse starts in school with girls being programmed to be submissive, quiet, pretty and baby machines needs to stop. We are human beings, with our own thoughts and minds.
If anything this book should be made statutory reading for all teacher, doctors, social workers and judges. Women should not be made to blame themselves, the tide needs to turn on the actual abuser's (mostly men) and our laws need changing.
I hope more women read this amazing insight in to a world rarely discussed.

The only people who are to blame are Men!
