I listened to the original first book cruel elites first so I’m glad to now listen to what was the prequel. It’s so nice to have the back story and the who’s, how’s and where’s. I have really enjoyed the character building and fully understanding why Onyx is the way she is in later books. I definitely think it’s the best thing that the authors have chosen to make this their book one away from the box set in another series. This is the perfect strong start with a very interesting cliffhanger!

I enjoyed the story and the writing style in this book, definitely worth a listen if you like vampire/fae/academy type tales. It raced a bit fast for me, I felt there could've been more. The narrator also had a seriously irritating quality but I got used to it quickly enough!

alright so I started (I believe) with book two so going back and listening to this one gives more insight into the series as a whole.

This was my first experience of these authors and narrator. The story was a great introduction into the secret paranormal going on within the human world. In it the Fae are enslaved by the vampires. It was great to meet Onyx who is a Fae who is determined to have a say in her life. She was a strong lead, although at times slightly selfish. There were lots of twists to the the story.
I enjoyed the narration. Would definitely recommend a listen! Look forward to seeing where the series goes from here.
