Summary

A woman's death sees rumours flood the island community – as Inspector Jimmy Perez's life is about to change forever. Wild Fire is the eighth Shetland mystery from Ann Cleeves.

A new English family have moved to Shetland, eager to give their autistic son a better life. But when a young nanny’s body is found hanging in the barn of their home, rumours of her affair with the husband begin to spread like wild fire.

With suspicion raining down on the family, DI Jimmy Perez is called in to investigate. For him it will mean returning to the islands of his on–off lover and boss Willow Reeves, who will run the case.

Perez is already facing the most disturbing investigation of his career when Willow drops a bomb-shell that will change his life forever. Is he ready for what is to come?

Now a major BBC One drama, Shetland, starring Douglas Henshall.

Critic reviews

An excellent series
Even by her standards this is an outstanding thriller
Cleeves writes traditional, solid detective stories, and this is as finely crafted and satisfying as a well-made piece of furniture – just look at the workmanship

The last in the Shetland series, and I think the author has chosen the right time to end it. We can’t be far off 20 murders in 5 years, which is approaching Midsomer levels. I loved Kenny Blyth’s narration, as always. But I am getting a bit bored with the background misogyny from the author. She’s pretty unpleasant about so many of her female characters. The constant banging on about women being too noisy, too successful, too pushy, too much to blame for everything, is wearing. (And feels outdated).

Goodbye, Jimmy.

Sad to hear the last of the Shetland series but well wound up. I came late to the books having watched the tv series which are very different in the Cassie/Fran back story but equally enjoyable. Kept me guessing to the end and as usual very well read by Kenny Blyth. Recommended.

Farewell to Perez

Loved reacquainting with Perez & Sandy in an unfamiliar area. Good to see an autistic character portrayed so well.
