Summary

Don’t miss this heart pounding apocalyptic romance from New York Times bestselling author Kylie Scott!

There’s only one person Dean Wallace wants to save from the end of the world: sunshine girl from across the street. She’s always smiling. Who knows, maybe she can teach him a thing or two about how to live? But saving her against her will is harder than he expected.

Astrid Hardy doesn’t know what to think when she wakes up in her hot neighbor’s basement. He says he wants to protect her from the deadly virus threatening to collapse society. But that sounds like paranoid conspiracy theory nonsense, and losing her sh*t seems like the correct response.

As they watch the downfall of the world play out online, hear approaching gunshots, and smell smoke from nearby burning buildings, it all starts to seem horribly realistic. With almost everyone they know dead, and law and order gone...how will they navigate this new world together?

I read “stalker” and “kidnaps her” and jumped in blind fully prepared for a dark romance. But this leaned far more into found family with an end-of-the-world backdrop.

And honestly? Once I adjusted my expectations, I had a really fun time.

The banter carried this book for me—I laughed a lot, and the dynamic between the characters was easy to enjoy. It’s very much a fall-fast kind of romance, with that grumpy/sunshine energy that just works.

I did find myself losing a bit of interest when the child was introduced—not because it didn’t make sense (you can’t exactly leave a 9-year-old behind in the apocalypse 😭), but it shifted the tone for me.

I also wanted more from the big final confrontation. It felt like it wrapped up a little too quickly compared to the build-up.

That said, the pacing overall was solid, and it’s a quick, entertaining read.

Went in expecting dark chaos… got soft apocalypse instead.
