But not quite. Brilliantly written and performed, the story was excellent and had me trawling back through the previous stories in my mind to try to guess the end. Nearly but not quite .... well done to writer and performers, I can’t wait till the next one.

A bit of hunger games and a bit of west world, spies and sad bits. I liked the others in this series but, honestly, this wasn’t even derivative in a good way and only one character was engaging. Winter herself was 2D.

I’ve been looking forward to Winter’s next adventure and this more than lived up to expectations. It’s another tense, fast paced instalment, which I couldn’t put down. Winter Dawn fills in more of Winter’s back story as she is called to protect a US senator in New York from swarms of killers, while uncovering the riddle of Colosseum. This is an online mega hit which singles out public figures - including the senator - for execution and handsomely rewards the successful hunter. Winter is on top form and I really grew to like her initially clueless and helpless charge, who turns out to have some steeliness at her core. Another storming instalment in the Winter series!

I was a little concerned given the number of people that wrote negative reviews, presumably as they wanted a new Winter story that carried on from the first two. This isn't that. Without giving too much away (possible spoilers), this a prequel and about 45% of the story is ready by Lorelei King, and the remaining 55% by the wonderful Ell Porter, the voice of Winter so to speak. The story itself is the reason for this split. It is told from two perspectives, hence dual narrators which is definitely different to most audiobooks. The voice of Lorelei when you are expecting Ell is probably what unfortunately, put a lot of off the book a bit, because it is the majority of the first 50% of the book, and the reader is wondering 'Why isn't this from Winter's perspective?', and 'Where is Ell?'

Personally I was happy with Lorelei and what that part of the narration and story was trying to achieve, I thought she did a good job of what was asked of her. it is arguably a tough job given the circumstances and she shouldn't receive any discredit.. Ell, is as ever, excellent as ever. I enjoyed the story, and there are a number of parallel's to the earlier books, (not trying to spoil anything)

I would advise giving it a chance and a large chance, until you get to the familiar territory of Ell narrating Winter. If you do you are likely to finish the book. If you don't you might be asking for your credit back.

Hopefully we will be seeing more of Winter in the future.

The narration by Ell Potter makes all three "Winter" episodes exceptional auditory experiences. In Winter Dawn she is joined by Lorelei King to good effect. To be honest they could have been reciting their times-tables and they would have been well worth the listen.
I suppose I should mention the story. I admit to being somewhat in the dark about what was going on for at least two thirds of the book - and, it turns out that was no bad thing really - the threads all come together to good effect in the end and I was gratified to learn that I had not entirely missed the plot and some of my speculation was close to correct. I have given 5* for performance and 4* for the story - the dropped star is mainly because you need to suspend belief to the extreme at times - particularly as to the capabilities of the 60 year old female senator methinks - but I will not risk a spoiler by being too specific. Having said that the two -or three - strong female lead characters are great and one of two of the other characters could give cinematic Bond villains a run for their money.
To sum it up, this was Brill. and the next Winter Audio book - assuming it will turn up and that the same narrator(s) is/are involved - will be at the top of my must have list. More please.
