Summary

A new excitement comes to the village of Thrush Green when Harold Shoosmith, a distinguished bachelor who has chosen the village for his retirement, takes the corner house on the green. Harold is soon enmeshed in village politics and becomes involved in the private lives of his neighbours as well. His presence has a dramatic effect on Dimity Dean and Ella Bembridge and is the cause of a serious misunderstanding between the two friends.

And the village’s widowed rector finds in Harold a new friend who gives him the courage to end his lonely state.

This is a sentimental look at life in a picturesque village where everyone knows everyone. A comforting book to read if you don't want to make too much effort but still worth reading.

Such a good writer. Subtle and deceptively simple, but so full of humanity, poetry, love and comedy. The scene where Albert Piggott gets engaged is an absolute hoot. I won't say too much here :)
