Summary

'Haunting, ominous and astonishingly dark. A mesmerising triumph.' Suzy Aspley, author of Crow Moon

'Unnerving and windswept with a wild, Gothic heart.' Jody Cooksley, author of The Small Museum

'Compelling contemporary gothic, skin-creepingly good.' Elaine Thomson, author of Hawthorn

Within the walls of Winterbourne dwells a secret room, with an unspeakable collection of books.

Librarian Anne Adams has found the perfect escape: a job cataloguing the library of Winterbourne, an architectural masterpiece on a remote island off the west coast of Scotland.

Surrounded by an awe-inspiring landscape, the library is magnificent, with priceless first editions, a book lover's dream. However, Anne's early weeks in her new job are beset by obstacles - no internet, a house plunged into darkness every night and unexplained mysteries on the island.

After an unannounced visit from her employer, the enigmatic Lucien Broussard, Ann wonders what happened to the previous librarian when she finds notes hidden in the library's ancient tomes. As echoes of the past start to reveal the house and Lucien's dark secrets, suddenly Anne's dream job becomes a living nightmare.

This book wasn't what I expected at all! I was in for wintery murder mystery and AI found this, so AI was wrong but crikey it's a helluva ride. Intriguing and mysterious for about half, chilling and horrifying for the other half. Really quite something.

Truly unexpected ending!

This is an absolutely beautiful book. I couldn't stop listening. Its so well written taking its time to guide the listener along the paths of the story. The narrator is brilliant. Couldn't be a better match for the story. A gentle telling of the twists and turns, just perfect.
