About this listen

Braiden Beadle’s craft shop is on its last legs, even though it’s filled with the plushest yarns and the finest fabrics. Nobody cares for crafts anymore, not since the dungeon appeared outside Weathervale. Adventurers have swarmed the seaside city, eager to discover the dungeon’s treasures…and not a single one of them needs any knitting needles.

Desperate to save his shop, Braiden prepares to brave the mysterious dungeon for its riches. But Augustin Arcosa, the Wizard of Weathervale, has deemed the dungeon a threat to his hometown. He wants to seal it away forever.

Armed with only his wits and his impractical magic of weaving, Braiden must convince the haughty and annoyingly handsome wizard that the dungeon poses no danger to Weathervale. And there’s only one way to be certain: they must explore its depths together.

Can an unlikely adventurer and a windbag wizard find common ground underground? Join Braiden, Augustin, and an evolving party of quirky colleagues as they embark on the cozy quest of a lifetime. A humorous, heartwarming fantasy adventure perfect for fans of Legends & Lattes, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Terry Pratchett.

I always love Nazri’s writing, so after a quieter year it was great to get back into listening to their style of writing. I loved the characters as always and the wit and humour that is always written into each page. Loved the narration, thought their range of characters was really good and they have a really easy to listen to voice.

The story itself is cosy, so the beginning pace felt a little slower, but it picks up later and has as always, left me waiting for the next one!

Another great new series!

I’m not the biggest fan of cosies in any shape or form, but I’ve enjoyed some of Nazri Noor’s other fantasy series in audio, so decided to give Wizards & Weavers a try. First off, the narration by Jon Vertullo is absolutely fantastic - he has an incredible range of character voices, finding a clear and distinctive way to voice every cast member in the story AND for the narrative portions of the story as well. (I especially loved his interpretation of Bones – who sounds uncannily like Rizzo the Rat! – and his Shatner-esque delivery of Warren’s dialogue is a hoot.)

Wizards & Weavers has a lot going for it – the worldbuilding is terrific, the secondary characters are well-written, and Braiden is a likeable, warm-hearted person with a dry sense of humour who only wants the best for everyone. But I struggled to get into it; the pacing is very slow (there is one chapter devoted entirely to the making of omelettes and scrambled eggs!) and it wasn’t until around two-thirds of the way through that things picked up and the story really began to come to life. Also, if you’re looking for romance, you won’t find much of it here; Braiden is obviously smitten with Augustin, and I’m always up for a good slow-burn romance, but in this book it’s more like a no-burn (which was a bit disappointing).

Still, that last third, together with the outstanding narration has me thinking I’ll probably give the next book a try when it comes out in audio.

New cosy fantasy with fantastic narration!
