Summary

Do you feel uncharacteristically trapped and isolated lately? Are you avoiding people? Are you sitting at home feeling lonely? Many people are feeling a sense of disconnection. Some of these same people have worked through those feelings to regain their former self-assurance. But not all of us! As the author, I’m here to tell you that I have personally experienced this situation, and I found my way through it.

This book is not my life story, but the events in my life led me to write about these topics that will help everyone:

  • Identify and conquer the feeling of disconnection
  • Spot the difference between mental health and a mental illness
  • The surprising positive health benefits of talking to others
  • Why conversation is the currency of social interaction
  • Overcome crippling isolation and move forward

You can walk away from isolation! Follow me back to your life.

If you can’t accept your situation, either, it’s time to learn a way out of it. You are not helpless. You are not too old or too young to get your social life going. The roadmap is right here! Please don’t stay disconnected from life for a moment longer! Even if you feel overwhelmed by starting, you can do this by taking one step at a time.

In "You Can Talk to Anyone," Ellen Dawson addresses the sense of disconnection and isolation many people experience today arising from poor communication skills. The Author offers practical guidance and effective communication skills to help readers overcome these feelings and develop meaningful relationships. Dawson talks about her own experiences making the content very relatable. Straight away, she offers techniques for changing habits of thought to encourage the reader into a new mindset regarding social interactions.
The book covers a range of important topics related to communication and interpersonal connections, like conversation branching (answering a question and adding a little more information as background) and techniques for building rapport. She covers a lot more, going into the differences between mental health and mental illness, and acknowledges that there are gaps in the research when it comes to effective conversation as social currency.
The whole world has been locked down for what seems like an age, and those who would normally have struggled as communicators must be doubly affected; in that sense, the book is timely. I don’t struggle to communicate, but a loved one does, so I listened to the book with keen interest. I believe this book is a valuable resource for all those who struggle to communicate and those who want to understand the barriers they face and help them.
I liked the psychology behind the information; I think it’s well-researched and science-based. The narration is easy to listen to. My preferred pace was 1.2.
