風流三昧の俳諧師蘿月は、遊芸への思いを断ち切れずにいる甥の長吉に、敢えて親孝行のために辛抱せよと諭し、長吉と懸隔が生じる苦衷を味わう荷風の懐旧情緒の代表作のひとつ「すみだ川」。他に、新橋の花柳街を題材にした『新橋夜話』より「牡丹の客」、麻布の古家に響いてくる鐘の音の情緒を描く「鐘の声」、明治末年、外遊から帰国して東京の喧噪や雑然さに憤然とする中で訪れた深川で、たちまち懐かしい昔に戻ることができたしみじみさを描く随筆「深川の唄」の3編を収録。
