🎙️ SHOW NOTES — "Queue for Murder"

The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes 1001 Sherlock Holmes Stories & The Best of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Original Air Date: January 6, 1947 Starring: Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes, Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson Writer: Dennis Green & Anthony Boucher (series writers during the Rathbone/Bruce years)

In "Queue for Murder," Holmes and Watson find themselves investigating a baffling crime that unfolds in one of London's most ordinary settings: a queue of people waiting in line. What begins as a simple crowd scene turns deadly when a man collapses in the middle of the line — murdered in full view of dozens of witnesses who saw nothing at all.

Holmes must determine how a killer managed to strike in such a public place without being seen, and why the victim was targeted. As he interviews the people in the queue, he uncovers a web of hidden motives, secret identities, and a carefully timed plan that depended on the anonymity of the crowd.

This episode showcases Holmes at his analytical best, turning a seemingly impossible crime into a solvable puzzle through observation, logic, and his uncanny ability to see what others overlook.

Original Air Date: March 10, 1947 Starring: Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes, Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson Writer: Dennis Green & Anthony Boucher

In "The Singular Affair of the Ancient Egyptian Curse," Holmes and Watson are drawn into a case steeped in superstition and fear. When a series of mysterious deaths occur following the opening of an Egyptian tomb exhibit in London, whispers of an ancient curse begin to spread — frightening the public and baffling the authorities.

Holmes, ever the rationalist, refuses to accept supernatural explanations. As he investigates, he uncovers a pattern of events that point toward a very human motive hidden beneath the veil of ancient legend. The case leads the detective through museums, private collections, and the shadowy world of antiquities, where greed and obsession can be as deadly as any curse.

  • THE ADVENTURE OF THE EMPTY HOUSE A SHERLOCK HOLMES MYSTERY by ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE
    May 29 2026

The first in "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" series

🎙️ SHOW NOTES — "THE ADVENTURE OF THE EMPTY HOUSE" 1001 Sherlock Holmes Stories & The Best of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

In this unforgettable tale, Sherlock Holmes returns from the dead — and the world of detective fiction changes forever.

"The Adventure of the Empty House" picks up three years after the tragic events at Reichenbach Falls. Dr. Watson, still grieving the loss of his closest friend, has settled into a quieter life. London has moved on. Crime has not. And then, without warning, everything changes.

A mysterious murder shocks the city — a killing carried out under impossible circumstances. As Watson studies the case, he crosses paths with a familiar figure in the shadows… and the story erupts into one of the most dramatic reunions in all of literature.

Holmes reveals the truth behind his disappearance, the danger that forced him into hiding, and the long game he has been playing against the remnants of Professor Moriarty's criminal empire. What follows is a tense, atmospheric pursuit through London's darkened streets, culminating in a confrontation inside the eerie, dust‑filled "empty house" that gives the story its name.

This episode marks the official resurrection of Sherlock Holmes — a moment readers in 1903 greeted with relief, excitement, and sheer joy. Doyle's return to Baker Street is filled with energy, clever deduction, and the emotional weight of a friendship restored.

Whether you're revisiting a classic or hearing it for the first time, "The Adventure of the Empty House" remains one of the most satisfying and iconic stories in the Holmes canon — the triumphant return of the world's greatest detective.

  • THE ADVENTURE OF THE FINAL PROBLEM A SHERLOCK HOLMES MYSTERY by ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE
    May 27 2026
🎙️ SHOW NOTES — "THE ADVENTURE OF THE FINAL PROBLEM" 1001 Sherlock Holmes Stories & The Best of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

In this landmark episode, we present one of the most dramatic and consequential stories in the entire Sherlock Holmes canon: "The Adventure of the Final Problem." First published in 1893, this tale was intended by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to be the last Sherlock Holmes story — the one that would bring the great detective's career to a definitive end.

The story opens with Holmes at his most vulnerable, arriving at Watson's door battered and shaken after a series of violent attempts on his life. For the first time, Holmes reveals the existence of a shadowy mastermind behind London's criminal underworld: Professor James Moriarty, the "Napoleon of Crime." What follows is a tense, fast‑moving pursuit across Europe as Holmes and Watson attempt to escape Moriarty's reach — a chase that leads them to the thunderous, mist‑shrouded Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland.

It is here, on the edge of a roaring abyss, that Holmes faces his greatest enemy in a confrontation that would shock readers, devastate fans, and ignite one of the most intense public reactions in literary history.

This reading captures the full emotional weight of Watson's narration — the urgency, the fear, the loyalty, and the profound sense of loss that made this story unforgettable. Whether you're revisiting a classic or hearing it for the first time, "The Final Problem" remains a powerful reminder of why Sherlock Holmes became, and remains, one of the most beloved characters in world literature. s.

If you enjoy listening to period stories by brilliant authors such as Conan Doyle - you probably don’t want your ears overpowered by some gabbling semi articulate person announcing why you should change your bank account to ……. Well, I certainly don’t. But a further issue is the entire narration. It’s just not good. Yes it’s free - but life is too short to waste attempting to enjoy these podcasts. Sorry. Now removed from my account.

Poor narration; really a vehicle for Advertisements
