In 2009 a 28-year-old from Malaysia walked into Goldman Sachs and walked out with billions in financing. Five years later, four point five billion dollars had vanished from a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund called 1MDB.

The money allegedly financed yachts, Picasso paintings, casino nights with Hollywood stars — and the production of "The Wolf of Wall Street." The film about Wall Street fraud was, according to court documents, made with money traced back to 1MDB.

By 2020 the United States called it the largest kleptocracy case in its history. Goldman Sachs (Malaysia) pleaded guilty. The parent company paid $2.9 billion in settlements. Two bankers were convicted. The Prime Minister of Malaysia is in prison.

The man at the center — Jho Low — has never appeared in a U.S. courtroom.
