• Unit 731: The War Crimes the Allies Agreed to Forget | 5 Minute Strange
    Jul 1 2026

Between the nineteen thirties and nineteen forty-five, a covert Imperial Japanese Army facility in occupied Manchuria conducted lethal experiments on thousands of Chinese, Korean, and Russian prisoners — deliberate infection with plague and cholera, vivisection without anaesthesia, frostbite experiments, pressure chamber tests, and biological warfare attacks on civilian populations. Estimates of the death toll range from three thousand to twelve thousand inside the facility alone. When the war ended, General MacArthur granted the perpetrators immunity in exchange for their research data. None were prosecuted.

In this episode of 5 Minute Strange, we cover the full documented history of Unit seven thirty-one — the scale of the experiments, the biological warfare operations against Chinese cities, the destruction of evidence at the end of the war, and the American decision to trade justice for data. Several of the scientists went on to distinguished careers in Japanese medicine and academia. Not one of them was tried for what they did.

  • Operation Sea-Spray: When the US Military Sprayed San Francisco | 5 Minute Strange
    Jun 30 2026

In September nineteen fifty, US Navy vessels spent six days releasing bacteria into the air over San Francisco as part of a classified test to see whether biological weapons could be covertly deployed against a city. Eight hundred thousand residents breathed it in without knowing. Within a week, eleven patients at Stanford University Hospital developed unusual infections caused by the same bacteria. One man died. The operation was classified for twenty-seven years.

In this episode of 5 Minute Strange, we cover Operation Sea-Spray and what it was part of — the military's programme of over two hundred and thirty-nine open-air biological and chemical agent tests conducted over American cities between nineteen forty-nine and nineteen sixty-nine. San Francisco was one city. Minneapolis, the New York City subway, and the low-income neighbourhoods of Saint Louis were others. The people who lived there were not asked.

  • The Stanford Prison Experiment: What Happened in the Basement | 5 Minute Strange
    Jun 29 2026

In August nineteen seventy-one, twenty-four ordinary college students were randomly assigned as guards or prisoners in a basement at Stanford University. The experiment was supposed to last two weeks. It was stopped after six days because the guards had become sadistic, the prisoners were breaking down, and the researcher running it had lost his own grip on what he was supposed to be doing. One woman visited on the fifth day, looked at what was happening, and was the only person out of fifty observers who said it needed to stop.

In this episode of 5 Minute Strange, we cover the full six days of the Stanford Prison Experiment — the escalating abuse, the psychological breakdowns, the graduate student who ended it, and the recordings uncovered in two thousand and nineteen that showed the lead researcher coaching the guards to be more aggressive. The experiment spent fifty years as a cornerstone of psychology teaching. The truth turned out to be more complicated than anyone admitted.

  • Project MKUltra: The CIA Mind Control Program They Tried to Destroy | 5 Minute Strange
    Jun 28 2026

In nineteen fifty-three, the CIA approved a covert program to develop mind control techniques using LSD, sensory deprivation, electroconvulsive therapy, and psychological manipulation — administered to thousands of unwitting American and Canadian citizens through hospitals, universities, and prisons. Most subjects were never told what had been done to them. In nineteen seventy-three, CIA Director Richard Helms ordered all files destroyed. Twenty thousand documents survived by accident.

In this episode of 5 Minute Strange, we cover the full scope of Project MKUltra — the CIA chemist who ran it, the Canadian psychiatrist who erased his patients' personalities with CIA funding, the death of Frank Olson who fell from a New York hotel window after being secretly dosed with LSD, and the Senate hearing that brought part of the truth to light only because some files were misfiled in the wrong building. The rest was shredded.

  • Hoia-Baciu Forest: The Romanian Forest Where Nothing Grows in the Middle | 5 Minute Strange
    Jun 25 2026

In the middle of the Hoia-Baciu Forest near Cluj-Napoca, Romania, there is a perfectly circular clearing approximately one hundred metres across where nothing grows. The trees around it are alive. The clearing is dead. Scientific analysis of the soil has found elevated radiation and unusual mineral composition. Nobody has fully explained how a near-perfect circle of dead ground came to exist at the centre of an otherwise normal forest.

In this episode of 5 Minute Strange, we cover the full documented history of the world's most haunted forest — the shepherd who walked in with two hundred sheep and never came back out, the reports of visitors becoming disoriented and emerging hours later than expected, the nineteen sixty-eight photograph of a disc-shaped object above the trees that has never been debunked, and the scientific findings that confirm some of what has been reported while leaving the rest unanswered. People who enter the forest report rashes, nausea, and faces in their photographs. The circular clearing sits in the middle of all of it, dead and silent.

  • The Taos Hum: The Sound Nobody Can Find the Source Of | 5 Minute Strange
    Jun 24 2026

For decades, a small percentage of residents in and around Taos, New Mexico have been hearing a persistent low-frequency hum — a sound like a diesel engine idling, heard more strongly indoors than out, unaffected by earplugs, loudest at night. The majority of the population hears nothing. Those who hear it describe sleep disruption, headaches, nausea, and the particular distress of reporting something real that the people around them cannot perceive. A government-funded scientific team investigated in nineteen ninety-five and found no conventional source.

In this episode of 5 Minute Strange, we cover the full investigation into the Taos Hum — the scientific team that came and found nothing, the military VLF transmission theory, the comparison to the Windsor Hum which was eventually traced to a blast furnace in Michigan, and why no equivalent source has been identified for Taos. Some low-frequency hums have explanations. This one does not. The hum continues.

  • The Overtoun Bridge: The Scottish Bridge Dogs Jump From | 5 Minute Strange
    Jun 23 2026

Since the nineteen sixties, dogs have been jumping from the same spot on a Victorian stone bridge in Dumbarton, Scotland. The drop is fifteen metres to the rocks below. Some dogs have survived, been carried back to the top, returned to the exact same spot, and jumped again. Scientists have investigated. Warning signs have been posted. Nobody has produced an explanation that accounts for every documented case.

In this episode of 5 Minute Strange, we cover the full documented history of the Overtoun Bridge — the consistent location of every jump, the breeds most commonly involved, the scent theory that explains some of what happens and not all of it, and the ancient Celtic tradition that calls the area a thin place where the boundary between the living world and whatever lies beyond it is unusually close. The bridge is still in use. Dogs still cross it. The signs ask owners to keep their animals on leads near the parapet.

  • Centralia: The Pennsylvania Town That Has Been on Fire for 60 Years | 5 Minute Strange
    Jun 22 2026

In nineteen sixty-two, someone set fire to a landfill in Centralia, Pennsylvania. The fire spread into the abandoned coal mine tunnels beneath the town and has been burning ever since. It has been burning for over sixty years. Scientists estimate it will continue for at least two hundred and fifty more. The town of three thousand people that once stood above it is almost entirely gone — demolished, evacuated, erased. What remains is a grid of empty streets, broken road, and smoke rising from the ground.

In this episode of 5 Minute Strange, we cover the underground coal fire that destroyed an entire American town — the landfill decision that started it, the twelve-year-old boy who fell into a one-hundred-and-fifty-foot sinkhole in his own backyard, the residents who refused to leave and took the state to court, and the section of highway that split and buckled and sank and became one of the most photographed roads in America. The fire is still there. It is not going anywhere.
