Gunfire ripped through the Georgia air. Smoke rolled low across the shattered battlefield of downed and dying men.
The wounded lay everywhere; blue and gray uniforms tangled together in mud and blood. Confederate reinforcements advanced. Battered Union troops pulled back.
Yet in the chaos, a lone female figure moved towards the danger instead of away from it.
She wore men’s trousers, hardly the approved dress of a 19th-century lady.
Dr. Mary Walker embodied a special quality that originated from that unique period in America’s history. The passion to choose practicality and efficiency over comfortable conformity.
Bullets snapped past her ears. A shell burst behind her, showering dirt across her back. That didn’t matter to her.
Time and again she defied orders to stay back, to remain “safe.” She would go where other doctors refused. And she treated both friend and foe, as well as local civilians, men, women, and children.
And on that day in 1864, near Chattanooga, Tennessee, she would be captured by the enemy…
