About this listen

State of Florida vs. Krishna Maharaj is an investigative journey that spans 30 years in the American justice system, beginning when a British-Trinidadian businessman was arrested for a grisly double murder in 1980s Miami.

The story explores police corruption, judicial abuses of power and features a trail of international players that leads all the way to the doorstep of notorious drug trafficker, Pablo Escobar. Maharaj’s epic and ongoing struggle demonstrates how it takes just minutes to brand an innocent person as a murderer, but can take decades to right that injustice. This is a story that will make you question everything.

When you hear about cases going through the appeal system your mind is generally drawn to criminals trying it on or trying to use a loophole to invade the justice they deserve. You might think about criminal people who have been accused of one more crime than they actually did commit but you don’t generally think about those that are entirely innocent and just at the wrong place at the wrong time. those people surely, would see the light of day quickly and the justice system would deliver quickly them.

The catalyst in this story is one lawyer who for reasons unknown and completely unexpectedly stayed silent when you had the opportunity to put forward a strong and compelling case for his client leading to decades of injustice.

A worrying tale of injustice

Have to give a caveat: I have not been able to verify the claims in this podcast, but if I give it the benefit of doubt, this is a terrible shocker.
Though I gotta say, the failing of the justice system is do utterly complete, it is quite hard to believe, this really happened.
They bring some convincing arguments, though.

A really compelling Podcast, shedding light on Kris Maharaj's wrongful detention. An appalling miscarriage of justice which the US really ought to be ashamed of. How is he STILL in jail?! Thank you, Sonya and David for highlighting his story. Nx
