He was wrong about why they kept the watch. He was wrong about what the watching is for. And by the time he understood that the sleeping are safe precisely becausetheir eyes stay shut—that only the waking can see what moves through every house, every night—the tall, patient thing in the hall had already learned his name.

A slow, intimate descent into folk-historical dread, told first-person from inside the candlelight. Some comforts are doors. And some doors don't stay shut.
