About this listen

Since Victorian times, Christmas has traditionally been the time of year to gather around a log fire, turn the lights down low and indulge in a Ghost Story. Every year - journalist and broadcaster Jon Briggs (also known as the original voice of Siri on your iPhone in the UK) has recorded a haunted tale - thrilling enough to freeze your mulled wine and send shivers down the back of Santa's neck. These tales of the supernatural are collated here for your delectation and delight from 2015 onwards. You will remember to come back next Christmas...won't you?

  • Christmas 2025 - Slay Bells Ring... Are You Listening?
    Dec 24 2025

How time flies - another year has passed and it is time for another Christmas Ghost Story.

If you are new to us - Welcome - and if you have followed us for a while - you are very welcome back. We have a first for you this year because this year's tale is an original - never seen or heard - or indeed read until now. It also includes original music from my nephew - Sam.

Set in that narrow hour before midnight, when bells wait in their towers and houses hold their breath. It is a story of echoes rather than apparitions, of something unfinished, and of a presence that does not return to haunt — but to be heard.

The Bells of Marlowe House is told in the best Victorian traditions - with music composed and recorded by my amazing nephew - Sam Gold - who you can find here: @samgold_music.

Jon Briggs is a journalist, broadcaster and voice over. You may know him better as the original voice of Siri in the UK ("Daniel" on all Apple devices) or the BBC's Weakest Link quiz show.

We are celebrating 10 years of scary Christmas fireside entertainment! This year we reveal the goings on inside Number Ninety. If you have ever toyed with the idea of spending a night in an already haunted house, here is a cautionary tale. First published in 1890 and written by the Irish author B.M.Croker - a women who could boast that the prime minister - William Gladstone - was among her readers.

for a story set in an empty house, I found the heavy echo fitted beautifully. The story was OK - there was not enough detail in the tale to help the reader/listener to imagine the untold story at the end. But I still enjoyed it and it then segued into one of my favourites, The Monkey's Paw - yes, a ghost story, but also a parable for life. I am really pleased to have found these.

I really liked the echo!

I loved the background noises. All the episodes are very enjoyable and I look forward to 2025

His voice has so much depth and cadence

These ghost stories are great fun, perfect for Christmas listening, I love his voice too.

Fun

The stories are fine but the production and is awful. The music is far too loud and drowns out the narration in places and the whole thing sounds tinny. The narrator tries hard but the performance comes across as hammy and has the tone of a spoof documentary in the vein of Brass Eye. I gave up a little way into the second story.

Poorly produced

This has a horrible echo on it. I presume it’s all the way through, but I didn’t stick around to find out. Much better rendition of the tale on YouTube (minus the awful echo). See also Bitesized audio channel for similar (non echoey) ghost stories!

What were they thinking?
