  • HT & P BONUS - Devil's Planet REDUX
    Mar 23 2026

This is a repackaged repeat: an old episode of Happy Times and Places with a new intro and outro to reflect the discovery of this episode ...an episode which was lost when this edition was recorded. Hopefully this re-release will whet your appetite for the imminent release of Devils' Planet for the first time since 1965. The Daleks continue with their planning whilst the Doctor and co master the controls of the Spar spaceship - only to be propelled towards a penal planet. There's lots of theorising about the pictures we couldn't see when this episode was lost - and soon we'll be able to see if your host, Toby Hadoke, was right, and if the memories of original viewer Ian McLachlan match what actually happened. Sadly, Ian will not be able to join in when Devil's Planet when it hits inlayer on easter weekend, as he sadly passed away shortly after recoding this episode.

    Fare forward Ian x

  • HT&P 103.2 - Colony in Space 2
    Mar 20 2026

And so we get a new influx of characters who each represent an aspect of bullying mining conglomerate IMC. There are plenty of actor facts to detract us from the story which is a shame as Colony in Space has plenty going for it. But we manage to cover it, with guest Simon Curtis being upfront about wanting your host to actually win this one. But as the Colonists demonstrate, all you need is an enemy within in order to muck it up for you without your opponent having to do much at all...

This commentary was recorded before the death of the actor Tony Caunter.

  • HT&P BONUS - The Nightmare Begins REDUX
    Mar 13 2026

This is an old episode of Happy Times and Places with a new introduction (and maybe some post credits secret joy) which might, hopefully, help to pass the time between now and the newly recovered episodes appearing on iPlayer. I hope they whet the appetite. But to emphasise - the main body of this is a repeat, pure and simple, from the time that the late Ian K McLachlan chose his favorite things about The (then lost) Nightmare Begins. So there will be all sorts of speculation herein that, no doubt, turns out to be utter nonsense. So enjoy - an episode from the past resurfacing to help to celebrate the resurfacing of an episode from the past

This is a wonderful podcast, and one of my go to comforts. Toby is all at once a polymath in the Whoniverse but also a very down to earth and non-condecending voice in the community. It's a podcast full of heart, rock hard knowledge and charming befuddlemant. In an increasingly dull and hermoginised world its very much a happy time and place.

Warm, insightful, fun

I thought I knew a lot about classic Doctor Who but Toby Hadoke is in another league. His story reviews are excellent but it's the stand alone podcasts looking at one random aspect or theme in the show which at their best are sublime, especially his reminiscences of his childhood fandom. Maybe not a podcast for the casual viewer, but if think you know all about the whoniverse, think again, and enjoy. Happy times and places indeed.

Forensic and Funny

It’s so refreshing to hear a Doctor Who podcast which accentuates the positive rather than descending into moaning.
Not only that, but Toby is such a font of knowledge, telling you everything you could ever possibly want to know and maybe a few things you never knew you wanted to know. Even when you goes off topic, there’s a charm to him that makes you enjoy the tangents all the more.
Perfect listening to make you fall in love with the programme all over again.
