Ironically, for a series supposedly about women, they avoid using the word ‘women’ at all costs.
Instead of just saying ‘women’, they keep using various euphemisms, including ‘AFAB’ (‘assigned female at birth’ for the uninitiated).
The problem is that these terms are used so inconsistently that you cannot even ignore them. It is just jarring and takes you away from the important message.
My personal favorites from episode 1 alone include:
- ‘women and AFAB’… so if ‘women’ are in addition to ‘AFAB’ are we also including individuals born male but identifying as women?
- women apparently get worse treatment in hospital than ‘others’… I wonder what others you may be referring to to? I assume that you are not complaining that children have priority…
All this to say that unfortunately a podcast, which had once been an interesting and informative series about how people’s biases can have a real world impact on the quality of healthcare provided, has now been ruined. Rather than chewing on the alphabet, why don’t they try to focus on their primary aim - informing the listener on these very real issues and getting the message across in a clear and concise manner.
Important message ruined by people trying to show off with their progressive language choices.
