About this listen

What happens when Empire leaves a country - and its people - behind? Singer-songwriter Emma-Lee Moss left Hong Kong as a teenager, shortly before the UK handed the colony over to China in 1997. She unpicks the story of one of the last embers of the once-mighty British Empire - presenting a uniquely different relationship between a colonial government and its people.

A series that every Brit, regardless of heritage, should listen to. Especially those who identify as white British and who (the vast majority) were not taught about British colonialism... apart from the abolition of slavery and William Wilberforce.

A brilliant and vital series

Of course I know elements of our history. And to be honest I feel all children should learn the ugly truth of Britain’s past.

Personally I need to know the truth I want to know what happened and be annoyed, hurt and upset by our past. I don’t want the statues to be pulled down. What I want is additional plaques added explain the whole truth. I want to do better than our past.

We all need to know full histories to encourage and I force all of us to do better and to be humble and kind. My parents brought me up to treat people as I want to be treated and I try so very hard to do that.

I found this so informative and it made me cry at times. A great listen. We all need to hear more about Britain’s ugly past so we can do so much better for it’s future.
