North Carolina has its share of ghost stories, unexplained phenomena, and tales of the supernatural. In Guilford County, in the North Carolina town of Jamestown, comes one such tale. It’s the tale of the spirit of a young woman who haunts the underpasses of two bridges: one is a railroad bridge over east Main Street, which is currently in use, and the other is of an abandoned bridge nearby. The abandoned underpass may the site of a fatal car accident many years ago. Whispers of this legend have persisted for a century, echoing the tragedyof a young woman named Lydia, wearing a white dress and returning from a dance when disaster struck on a rainy night in the 1920s. Her date lost control of their vehicle, slamming into a bridge. Lydia did not survive the crash, so begins the tale of the vanishing hitchhiker of Jamestown, North Carolina.
