  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
    Oct 10 2023

It's time to visit a classic movie; the sort of movie that everyone wants to have seen but somehow don't find time to watch it. Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" lies at the intersection of incredible and incredibly boring. Those who start it wish they hadn't and those who finish it are glad they did. Thanks to some prompting from a fellow film nerd, Sean de Moura, Josh and Elijah have begun to catch up on some of these cinema-defining movies starting with this one. Listen in as Josh, Elijah, and Sean think together about the meaning of "2001: A Space Odyssey".

  • Frame By Frame
    Sep 12 2023

Every movie consists of thousands of individual images flashed in front of your eyes at varying frame rates. Sometimes, those images give the illusion of motion because they are captured by a camera, and sometimes, they give the illusion of motion because an animator drew images on the page. In other cases though, the illusion of motion comes from the meticulous moving of real objects on the screen frame by frame. This technique is called stop-motion animation.

In this week's episode, Josh and Elijah discuss the art of stop-motion animation and discuss what makes it so visually distinct. Along the way, they also talk through some of their favorite stop-motion movies, so be sure to listen for some new recommendations.

  • AFTERSHOW: Tolkien, Lewis, Chesterton, and Walt Disney
    Aug 8 2023

Welcome to the Aftershow! A fresh new episode one week early! Here's the thing. We usually sit around and talk movies and culture long after the recorder has been shut down. This time, we decided to let the recorder roll and provide bonus content for the podcast.

This time, our conversation explored Lewis and Tolkien's thoughts about Walt Disney and his classic animated feature "Snow White." You probably won't be surprised to know that Lewis and Tolkien didn't like it. However, you might be surprised at what G.K. Chesterton had to say about it.

"But wait!" you shout at your phone's screen. "Chesterton wasn't even alive when Snow White was released!" You are correct! Let me first assure you that we have no evil necromancy happening today. Rather, we consult his immortal words in his short essay called, "A Defense of Penny Dreadfuls" to imagine what he might have had to say to Lewis and Tolkien as they walked out of the theater.
