Galvarino was a legendary Mapuche warrior who fought against Spanish conquistadors in Chile during the 16th-century Arauco War. He is best known for his fierce resistance and resourcefulness after Spanish forces brutally amputated both of his hands, an act of torture he overcame by tying knives to his wrists to keep fighting.
