Educational, motivational and conversational! Functional and Integrative healthcare providers diving deep into the latest in integrative healthcare and pushing listeners to build the best and most fulfilling version of themselves "their Ultimate Self". Special guests along the way to share their unique stories in health, business and self-development, their ups and downs and their pursuit of their vision and mission.

This podcast was motivated by over a decade of patients telling and encouraging us to record our conversations and perspectives on various health subjects. For years we kept talking about needing to do it and finally after kicking the can down the road long enough we launched our podcast in January of 2023. Over the years, we would have conversations over the phone on our commute home. We would talk about the various things we would see in our office that day, discuss all the potential complexities of a case, the patient history that was missed from other providers. This would eventually lead to us ranting and going on and ultimately passionately discussing and advocating for a better path going forward for those patients. We would often end those calls saying that we should have recorded that! These conversations and our daily strive to help educate and empower our patients and community made this launch into a podcast not only make sense but ultimately inevitable.

We pride ourselves on fighting for patients to get better care, better answers and empowering them to take control of their health and life. This podcast is an extension of this wider push for empowering more people through education and asking for nothing in return (well maybe a share and pass long to those who would benefit from listening).

In the world of functional and integrative health there are varying shades or providers. The hope is our podcast will help listeners be better interviewers of providers out there and weed out the ones that like the sound of being an "integrative/Functional provider" but are still practicing an outdated, protocol driven and non specific model of healthcare. The world of chronic disease is growing by the minute and more and more are being impacted by chronic conditions and need providers who are willing to listen, dig deep, be humble and be willing to put the patient first above all else to figure out why the individual is where they are.

We found our way into the functional health world first with functional neurology and becoming experts in brain and neurological health. Quickly into this journey you realize the brain can not thrive without proper metabolic and cell health, Immune and cardiac function and optimal biochemistry...ultimately leading us to layer both functional and integrative medicine and functional neurology into our clinical approach. If you are going to retrain and rehab the brain you better home you can fuel it and feed it to see the best outcomes for neuroplasticity.

Our episodes are going to span across any and every top we can imagine. From mitochondrial health, anti-aging, functional medicine, functional neurology, concussion care and post concussion syndrome to mast cell activation, auto immune disease, weight gain and metabolic disease to name a few. Over the years we have been blessed to meet and work with incredible individuals and we will invite them on to share their perspective....From former pro athlete to business owner to author to renowned educator in the field, we plan to touch on it all.

We hope you enjoy our shows and discussions on functional and integrative health and we hope it can help serve you in becoming your best and strongest version of yourself. Please join in our mission to help educate and empower and ultimately force a new standard in healthcare that is about patient-centered care targeting the cause and not the symptom(s). Please share far and wide and join our mission!

  • Understanding Female Hormones, Perimenopause Featuring Dr. Kelly Ruef N.D.
    Jun 4 2026
    Episode Summary

In this enlightening episode of The Wellness Institute of Dallas, we sit down with Dr. Kelly Ruef, licensed naturopathic doctor and clinical educator for Precision Analytical, the creators of the Dutch Test. Together, we dive into the complex world of female hormones, with a focus on navigating perimenopause, menopause, and the unique challenges women face when it comes to hormone health.

Dr. Ruef shares her personal journey into naturopathic medicine, sparked by her own struggles with cystic acne and frustration with traditional approaches that lacked comprehensive hormone testing. We explore the benefits of the Dutch Test—a dried urine test for comprehensive hormone analysis—and how it compares to conventional blood tests, allowing for a more detailed and actionable understanding of hormone balance, metabolism, and related health concerns.

    Key topics discussed include:

    • Early signs and symptoms of hormonal imbalance (heavy bleeding, acne, sleep disruption, mood changes, PMS)
    • What happens to progesterone and estrogen during perimenopause, and how this affects women physically and emotionally
    • The significance of testing hormones at the right time in the menstrual cycle and how improper timing can lead to misleading results
    • Insights on the interplay between stress, cortisol, and sex hormones—and the impact chronic stress can have on symptoms and overall well-being
    • How gut health, inflammation, and even environmental chemicals can disrupt hormone balance
    • Practical recommendations for optimizing hormone health, including sleep, stress management, exercise, supporting the gut, and building a collaborative, supportive care team

Dr. Ruef also debunks common myths around menopause, hormone therapy, and cortisol, while offering encouragement and hope for women at every stage of the journey. Whether you're considering hormone testing, seeking answers for stubborn symptoms, or simply looking to understand your body better, this episode packs actionable information and compassionate advice.
