• 78 - SAVING THE UNION AT GETTYSBURG | Gen. John Buford (Army) | Civil War
    May 13 2026

For hours, General John Buford’s cavalry delayed wave after wave of the best troops the Confederates had, skillfully trading space for time, falling back stubbornly, but keeping to the critical heights.

Carbines cracked, artillery boomed, and horses flattened their ears in the chaos of battle.

One of the finest horsemen in the Union Army, John Buford rode calmly among his men, encouraging them, directing fire, refusing to yield.

He suffered many casualties that day. But his goal was not glory or victory. It was time.

Later that day, just as Buford’s men were about to be overwhelmed, Union heavy infantry arrived. They moved in and occupied the heights Buford’s cavalry had protected with their lives.

    And they held.

The Battle of Gettysburg—and the fate of our nation—turned on the judgment and courage of one warfighter who understood the value of terrain, timing, and sacrifice.

Historians widely agree that without John Buford’s foresight and action, the Battle of Gettysburg—the pivotal battle of the Civil War—would have been lost before it began.

Despite his achievements, however, John Buford never lived to see victory...

  • 77 - HER CRIME WAS SAVING OTHERS... | Edith Cavell (Nurse) | WWI
    May 6 2026

At the beginning of World War I, a network of civilians in German occupied Belgium began hiding British and French soldiers and guiding them toward neutral Holland.

But they needed help. Someone they could trust.

Edith Cavell volunteered because that’s who she was.

Her nursing school in Brussels became more than a hospital. Secretly she hid British and French soldiers in her attic, cellar, and spare rooms.

She provided civilian clothing, food, and medicine. She coordinated with the Resistance to guide these escaping soldiers into neutral Holland under cover of darkness.

Of course, it was dangerous work.

The German military threatened to punish those helping escaping enemy soldiers, decreeing that anyone assisting fugitives would be executed as a traitor.

Still Edith continued to help the underground, a responsibility she took most seriously.

Over a year’s time, she helped save more than 200 Allied soldiers to escape to England, to home and freedom.

But each knock on the door she knew could be her last…

  • 76 - AMERICA'S SPARTANS | The Maryland 400 (Soldiers) | Revolutionary War
    Apr 29 2026

In August 1776, General George Washington’s army faced annihilation at the Battle of Long Island.

British General William Howe executed a brilliant flanking maneuver, trapping the inexperienced American forces against the East River.

The fate of the Revolution hung by a thread.

Standing in the path of thousands of advancing British and Hessian troops was the First Maryland Regiment, fewer than 400 mostly young men.

They launched a series of desperate bayonet charges delaying the enemy. Again and again, six times in all, they advanced into overwhelming enemy fire.

Nearly all were killed, but their sacrifice bought precious time for General Washington.

Their stand allowed thousands of American troops to escape to Brooklyn Heights. Under cover of a rare and providential fog, Washington successfully evacuated his entire army across the river.

Though they did not win the battle, the Marylanders saved the army, and with it, the Revolution.

Like the Spartans of old, their courage and sacrifice preserved the cause of liberty, ensuring America’s fight for independence would continue.

  • 75 - DOES AMERICA NEED A PERFECT PRESIDENT? | Andrew Jackson (General & President) | War of 1812
    Apr 22 2026

President and General Andrew Jackson was many things to many people.

Most of all he was a man of boundless energy who captured the presidency despite being the consummate Washington outsider.

He was one of history’s greatest generals, winning a victory at the Battle of New Orleans (against all odds) that most fail to realize likely saved the interior of the country from continued British encroachment, linking the heartland and the far west with British holdings in Canada.

Many tried to kill the man. He survived at least one assassination attempt while in office, and he did it in a miraculous way.

His wife was rejected by the leading women of Washington as a “loose woman,” labeled “low status” by the elite.

While generally disrespected by the wealthy, he saved the country from Civil War in the 1830s and corrected the American banking system.

And finally, he left Washington at the end of his presidency with only $100 in his pocket refusing to use his position of power to enrich himself and his cronies...

  • 74 - HE REFUSED TO ABANDON THE ALAMO | Lt. James Bonham (Soldier & Courier) | 1836
    Apr 15 2026

It is hard to understand the true nature of the sacrifice of the Alamo in American and Texas history without looking at the life and service of one of its stalwart defenders.

His name, James Butler Bonham, truly one of the least known, yet most devoted soldiers who fought to the death defending the eleven women and nine children who were also in the Alamo that fateful day of March 6, 1836.

Lieutenant Bonham was young with his whole life ahead of him. But when given the chance to flee to safety and to avoid the final slaughter, he chose to return to the fort and stand with its defenders.

He called them his brothers, and the example he set for us today is as worthy as any we might look to in the history of this illustrious nation.

James Bonham’s actions testify that the freedoms we often take for granted today are never free and never have been.

    Someone has paid…and paid dearly.

  • 73 - THEY LAUGHED... TILL SHE OPENED FIRE | Annie Oakley (Sharpshooter) | Wild West
    Apr 8 2026

Word spread through the town in minutes.

A young unknown woman had just challenged the famous marksman Frank Butler to a shooting contest. Frank was a shootist who had never lost a rifle match.

Facing him stood a shy young woman. She wore a plain, homespun dress and held an old, worn-out rifle.

Some in the crowd laughed out loud, mocking the girl.

But when the shooting began the laughter died.

One target after another. Clay pigeons, tossed coins, soda bottles, it didn’t matter. The young woman’s rifle cracked with precision. Shot after shot struck true, right out of the air, not a single miss!

When the contest ended, the famous Frank Butler had missed just one target. But the girl hit them all perfectly!

The crowd erupted, swarming around her, demanding her name. She just smiled politely saying nothing. It was Frank Butler who answered them.

“The girl’s name is Annie Oakley,” he said. “I expect you’ll remember that!”

Right there launched one of the most remarkable careers in history, a young woman who would be known by kings, queens, and presidents.

But that wasn’t what was important to her. What was made Annie Oakley worth remembering…

  • 72 - THE HERO WHO COULD NOT BE BOUGHT | The Good Shepherd | *An Easter Special*
    Apr 1 2026

In Middle Eastern lands, lands where my wife and I spent part of our lives, we watched humble shepherds, local herders running their sheep near our villa for the grass that grew there in the winter and spring months.

I talked with several. They were strong, but humble men. They had few, if any, resources to fall back on.

God was their protector. And they called upon Him regularly. And their children, and their sheep, were to be preserved at all costs.

    Truly, they were good shepherds.

From this cultural backdrop, Jesus ministered to the world.

The love the Savior holds for each of us proven by shouldering the seemingly impossible pain, sacrifice, and the eternal burden of human sin which encompasses the Infinite Atonement, in Gethsemane, on the Cross at Calvary, and three days buried in the Tomb.

As his beloved “lambs,” the Lord knows each of us by name. He carries each one of us in his arms and in his heart, especially those who may feel unworthy, alone, or hopelessly lost.

My friends, please know during this Easter Season that the Good Shepherd lives. He loves us. I testify that he will never, ever, abandon us.

  • 71 - ANGEL WITH THE LAMP | Florence Nightingale (Nurse) | Crimean War
    Mar 25 2026

The young soldier jerked upright on his cot, another wave of violent pain tore through him.

Outside, the distant thunder of artillery. But inside conditions were as lethal as the battlefield, more soldiers dying from infection and disease than from enemy bullets.

Again, the young soldier called out: “Please… someone…water.”

The soldier lay back. In his moment of hopelessness, the faint glow of an oil lamp appeared.

Coming closer it revealed the compassionate face of a tall, determined woman. She lifted a cup of clean water to his lips.

    “Easy now,” she said softly.

The soldier stared in disbelief. Such a beautiful woman, and here in this horrible place?

“What…what is your name?” he whispered to her.

She gave him a reassuring smile. “My name is Florence. Florence Nightingale. Rest now.”

But this wasn’t just any nurse. She was a miracle worker making the needed changes to turn the military hospital from a place where men went to die to a place of healing.

She studied the newly revealed germ theory. Hospitals across Europe and America adopted her system.

Today nurses around the globe still carry the spirit of this heroic woman into every long and challenging shift.

Thank you, Florence Nightingale, the Angel with the lamp.
