In March 1922, six members of the Gruber family were murdered on a remote Bavarian farmstead known as Hinterkaifeck.
Days before the killings, the family reported strange occurrences: footprints in the snow leading to the house but none returning, unfamiliar sounds in the attic, a missing key. After the murders, the killer appeared to remain on the property — feeding livestock, tending the fire, and living among the dead.
In this episode of The Eclectic, we explore the Hinterkaifeck murders in full — the timeline, the crime scene, the unsettling clues, and the investigation that failed to bring justice. We examine the leading suspects, the rumours of family secrets, and the chilling possibility that the murderer was hiding in plain sight.
More than a century later, Hinterkaifeck remains one of Europe’s most disturbing unsolved cases — a crime defined not only by brutality, but by silence.
