A fifth-generation tobacco farmer in south central Kentucky has worked the same two hundred acres his family has farmed since 1884. He knows every hollow, every ridge line, every dark corner of that land.
n a Thursday night in late November, alone in his tobacco barn at nine o'clock, he comes face to face with something that knows his land too.
His great-great-grandfather saw something in the tree line the first summer he owned the place. He got his rifle and his dog and went up into those woods and came back without having fired a shot, and never went up there at night again.
That was 1884.
his encounter happened three years ago. Whatever is on that ridge, it has been there a long time.
