Why would John the Baptist—who leaped in his mother's womb at the presence of Christ, baptized Jesus, and proclaimed Him as the Lamb of God—later send disciples to ask, "Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?" The answer reveals a mystery John could not see, a truth hidden in God's plan concerning Israel, the kingdom, and the dispensation of grace. At first glance, the question seems impossible to reconcile with everything John knew. Yet Scripture reveals that John's question was not born from unbelief, but from incomplete revelation. John understood the prophecies concerning Messiah, the kingdom, and the coming judgment. What he did not know was the mystery hidden in God concerning Israel's rejection, temporary blindness, and the pause in the prophetic program. In this study, we examine the prophecies of Isaiah and Malachi, John's role as the messenger sent before Christ, the significance of Elijah, and why Jesus answered John's question the way He did. We also consider how Israel's rejection of both the messenger and the Messiah opened the door for the dispensation of grace revealed through the Apostle Paul. God's promises to Israel remain certain. What John could not see was the mystery that would unfold between Christ's first coming and His return. Understanding that mystery helps us rightly divide God's Word and recognize where we stand in His plan today.
