A heartfelt comedy told through letters written from camp to an unknown figure, Mookie tries to uncover the legend of the Lady of the Lake, make friends with literally anyone, all while trying to mask her errant pubes from the rest of swim class.

  • Episode 1: Welcome to Camp Cartwright
    Aug 27 2020

Dear Kelly, They really, really hate me!

Mookie arrives at Camp Cartwright and quashes any hopes of being cool or even accepted. Late at night, after Fanny has fallen asleep, the girls tell Mookie the legend of the Lady in the Lake and the girl who went missing from camp 25 years ago. Is it not Mookie’s responsibility as a budding young reporter to get to the bottom of this? If she can’t be at journalism camp this summer, she decides to bring journalism to camp instead.

  • Episode 2: The Swim Test
    Aug 27 2020

Dear Kelly, I have made zero human friends.

Director Sue insists that Mookie halt reportage and “make friends”, which seems easier said than done. Worst of all, Director Sue has spoken the five worst words in the English language: “it’s the swim test today”. Not eager to get in the lake where The Lady is lurking around, hungry for a legacy camper; Mookie decides to follow Director Sue’s directive by including other campers in her investigation.

  • Episode 3: Trip Day
    Aug 27 2020

Dear Kelly, The Lady is real and out to get me.

Mookie starts to make leeway on her investigation, only to be sidetracked by a trip off camp to the Umbrella Cover Museum. Good news is that she finds two kindred spirits in fellow camper Carter Ruben-Rubens and Ned, the friendly camp handyman. Less great news is that according to some stupid bus game, Mookie is apparently going to get married in a paper bag while driving an ice cream truck.

I enjoyed listening but I think that the final episode is missing? Either that or it ends very abruptly!

Very charming, but think final episode is missing?

The hero’s single minded focus whilst at summer camp says at a lot more about her than all the others she interacts with. Lot’s of nuances that made me smile. Not sure if this book was intended for pre teens or adults, but enjoyable listening. Reminded me of Adrian Mole.

An enjoyable story told through the words of a very precocious 11 year old

The cast were really good.
Not my usual thing but I really enjoyed it.
Good for chilling out as it reminds me of other adventure books from childhood.
