Noticed a lump under the skin and wondering what it could be? Many subcutaneous (soft tissue) lumps are benign, commonly a lipoma (fatty lump) or a cyst, but some features warrant prompt medical assessment.

In this episode of the Cutting Edge Plastic Surgery (CEPS) Podcast, Dr Adam Greenbaum explains the common causes of lumps under the skin, how they are assessed clinically, and when treatment or removal may be recommended.

In this episode, we cover:

• Common benign causes (including lipomas and epidermoid cysts, often called “sebaceous cysts”)

• Key clinical clues: size, growth over time, tenderness, firmness, mobility, skin changes, and recurrence

• Red flags that should be checked sooner (e.g., rapid growth, increasing pain, ulceration/bleeding, fixation to deeper tissues, or a lump that feels deep)

• How lumps are assessed: history + examination, and when ultrasound/imaging or biopsy may be appropriate

• Treatment options: monitoring, in-clinic procedures where suitable, or surgical excision, and what recovery can involve

Serving patients across Auckland, Pukekohe, Waikato and NZ wide
