What truly defines hip hop, and how does it differ from rap? (Dj and Reg have pretty well defined, strong opinions on this one).

Dj highlights the East Coast's pivotal role in shaping hip hop's identity, and it quickly becomes a hill he is willing to die on. Originating in NYC, and producing foundational East Coast artists like Public Enemy, Eric B and Rakim, and Grandmaster Flash, hip hop's core identity seems to be East Coast.
