Episode Description — Can You Consent to Being Eaten? | The Armin Meiwes Case

In 2001, a man posted an online ad looking for someone willing to be killed and eaten.

    Someone answered.

In this episode, Izzy and Danny explore the case of Armin Meiwes — known as the Cannibal of Rotenburg — and the man who agreed to his request, Bernd Jürgen Brandes. What followed was not just a crime, but a legal and philosophical dilemma that challenged the limits of consent, autonomy, and criminal responsibility.

Through a detailed reconstruction of events and a breakdown of the court proceedings, this episode examines how German law approached a case where the victim appeared to willingly participate — and why the courts ultimately ruled it as murder.

More than anything, this story forces a difficult question:

If someone consents to their own death… does that make it any less of a crime?

  • S2 Ep9: How Do Cults Brainwash Their Members? | The Nazi Pedophile Who Ran a Sinister Cult | Case of Colonia Dignidad | True Crime
    Nov 20 2023
Important disclaimer: The episodes we cover on our channel are researched using publicly available information and archival resources. Every episode is created with the highest regard & the upmost respect to the victim, their families, and those close to them.

Another friendly reminder; Some aspects of the case are sensitive and may not be suitable for the light hearted. Therefore, trigger warning and viewer discretion is advised.

Colonia Dignidad was a secretive, isolated compound in Chile founded by German émigré Paul Schäfer in 1961. Initially presented as an idyllic Christian community, it later became known for its dark history of human rights abuses and criminal activities. The enclave had ties to the regime of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.

Colonia Dignidad was accused of numerous human rights violations, including torture, child abuse, and forced labor. Schäfer, the leader, was implicated in these crimes. The colony also served as a center for political repression during Pinochet's rule. In the late 20th century, the atrocities within the colony gained international attention.

The compound was raided in 2005, and Schäfer was arrested. He was later convicted of various charges, including child abuse, and sentenced to prison. The site, now called Villa Baviera, has undergone efforts to distance itself from its dark past and is used for tourism and agriculture. The history of Colonia Dignidad remains a dark chapter in Chile's past, symbolizing the abuse of power and the consequences of unchecked authority.
