कुंभकर्ण हा रावणाचा महाकाय आणि अतिशय पराक्रमी भाऊ होता. अधिक शक्ती मिळवण्यासाठी त्याने कठोर तपश्चर्या केली, पण सरस्वती देवीच्या प्रभावामुळे “ब्रह्मास्त्र” मागण्याऐवजी त्याच्या तोंडून चुकून “निद्रास्त्र” हा शब्द बाहेर पडला आणि त्याला दीर्घ निद्रेचा शाप मिळाला. राम-रावण युद्ध सुरू झाल्यावर लंकेचा पराभव जवळ येऊ लागला आणि रावणाने कुंभकर्णाला जबरदस्तीने जागं केलं. कुंभकर्णाने रावणाला सीता परत करण्याचा आणि श्रीरामांशी वैर न करण्याचा सल्ला दिला, पण भावावरील निष्ठेमुळे आणि कर्तव्यभावनेमुळे तो युद्धभूमीत उतरला. आपल्या प्रचंड सामर्थ्याने त्याने घनघोर युद्ध केले, पण शेवटी राम आणि लक्ष्मणाच्या बाणांनी तो पराभूत झाला. मृत्यूपर्यंत त्याने आपल्या निष्ठेचा आणि कर्तव्याचा मान राखला.Kumbhakarna, the gigantic and mighty brother of Ravana, performed intense penance to obtain a divine weapon and become even more powerful.
