• We Can Still Feel Good About America - Here's How
    Jul 1 2026

This week, S.E. considers the holiday weekend and the 250th Anniversary of America. In light of a new Gallup poll — and just, you know, being an American recently — it's clear we're all feeling a little meh about patriotism. It can feel divisive, even toxic, and apparently at a record low across the spectrum. But there have been glimpses of feel-good Americana as seen through the lens of the World Cup visitors who seem, again and again, tickled by our food, our stadiums, and our general warm-hug energy. Go us! Also in the interest of two things being true, producer Lauren talks about a new project called 250 American Promises - a national letter-writing campaign that considers how can we both celebrate America and ask it to do better. And stay tuned for an insightful conversation with author and political scientist Kirby Goidel about how Trump not only reshaped the Republican Party, but also the entire political system.

  • In the Trump Era, politics is our Reality TV. Let's discuss.
    Jun 26 2026

It’s easy to feel bleak in the times we live. Can our democracy withstand so many forces trying to break it? In this week’s episode, SE shares an optimistic take: Just because we can’t see the solution doesn’t mean there isn’t one out there to any number of seemingly unsolvable problems facing the nation ahead of its 250th anniversary. She would never have predicted, for one, that a self-identifying “iPad kid” would, through the deus-ex-machina of good old fashioned peer pressure, one day aspire to be a “touch grass kid” instead. Sometimes solutions can be found that one never thought possible!

There’s plenty of news to get to this week as well, from Trump’s big reversal on housing, to a breakdown of the Iran fiasco with returning guest Josh Rogin.

  • Trump's 'blunder' of an Iran deal and America's plummeting trust in media
    Jun 19 2026

As predicted last week, Trump technically has a deal with Iran. But according to, well, everyone -- including leaders from his own party -- Trump's Iran deal not only reneges on every reason he listed for going to war in the first place but also rises to the level of "worst foreign policy blunder in decades." S.E. unpacks the art of Trump's abdominal deal. Later, S.E. talks Sarah Rumpf, contributing editor at Mediaite, about the public's plummeting trust in media. The two journalists debate the causes (it's not all Trump) and what could help.

  • S.E.’s Talkin’ Coffee … and caffeine minimalism
    Jun 17 2026

Decaf is freedom! On our last episode of Talkin’ Coffee, S.E. and her producers Lauren and Derrick taste-tested Lowkey Coffee, a new ready-to-drink coffee product specializing in decaf coffee. This time, one of Lowkey Coffee’s co-founders, Adriana Gindlesperg, joins the discussion to divulge the secrets of arabica entrepreneurialism. Then, the regular panel discusses all the news that’s fit to sip, including an environmentally friendly alternative to coffee pods (great!), a chatbot for your coffee order (less great!), and more game-related coffee news.

  • Celebrating Trump’s 38th declaration that the war in Iran is ‘over’
    Jun 12 2026

S.E. is back with a recap of the week’s news. First, some thoughts on the election loss of South Carolina House Republican (and apparent self-appointed trans bathroom police chief) Nancy Mace. Then, the BIG news: President Trump’s has once again announced – despite what Iran might tell you – that the war in Iran has concluded. Will this one stick?

S.E. is also joined Kevin Madden, a Republican strategist who worked on the Romney campaign, for his thoughts on the 2026 and 2028 elections.

  • Trump's lame duck presidency & Democrats' game of chicken
    Jun 5 2026

This week, could Republicans be in a worse position for the fast-approaching midterms? Let S.E. count the ways. Because this is -- ahead of schedule and in a bigger way than expected -- Trump's lame duck presidency. S.E. puts this moment into context and what it means for Republicans. And stay tuned for an interview with Karen Finney -- CNN contributor and Democratic strategist -- who weighs in on some of the Democratic primary results from this week and whether Dems can get themselves across the finish line in the midterms. Plus, a lightning round and mental health break.

  • Republicans, be careful what you wish for
    May 29 2026

SE sits down with her colleague Van Jones to discuss what is coming next for both parties ahead of 2028, and what voters actually are looking for. But first, she breaks down a doozy of an election in Texas, where Sen. John Cornyn, a four-term incumbent, popular and liked by his constituents, and who voted with Trump 100% of the time, nevertheless lost his primary to the more MAGA candidate. Cornyn led Ken Paxton, the scandal-ridden sitting State Attorney General, in the initial votes of the primary, but neither candidate cleared 50% so it went to a runoff. A week before the finish line, Trump endorsed Paxton, and he clinched the nomination. But while MAGA celebrates “Trump the Kingmaker” once again, this could turn out to be a major self-own for Trump’s party. Not only does Paxton’s nomination give a major boost to the underdog Democrat in the race James Talarico come November, but Cornyn is also still in office until the general election winner is sworn in, and now he is joining the ranks of other targets of Trump’s ire: beleaguered Republicans on the outs with Trump like Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky and Bill Cassidy in Louisiana. These Republicans could be thorns in Trump's side through the rest of their terms. They could prevent him from passing legislation, getting war and ballroom funding, or confirming judges and cabinet appointments. SE’s advice to them? Be assholes. They don’t owe Trump anything. And there are more of them than Republicans can afford to lose on a vote. This could get interesting!
