I’m continuing my true crime travels through Europe, this time through Baden-Baden, the Black Forest, Triberg and Freiburg. These are some of the most beautiful places you can visit in Germany, but each one carries a darker story beneath the scenery. In Baden-Baden, we look at the witch trials of 1627 to 1631, when fear, religion, politics and forced confessions helped turn accusation into execution. In the Black Forest and Triberg, we talk about Heinrich Pommerenke, the violent West German serial offender known as the “Beast of the Black Forest,” whose 1959 crimes showed how predators can use roads, railways, stations and public spaces to move across a region. Then in Freiburg, we examine the 2016 murder of 19-year-old medical student Maria Ladenburger, a case built through careful police work, DNA, transit surveillance and phone data.

I’m in Europe for the next three weeks, mixing a little vacation time with some true crime. I’m recording parts of this episode in Amsterdam and Cologne, near the place where Peter Kürten was raised, and I’ll also spend two days in Düsseldorf walking the crime scenes tied to one of Germany’s most infamous killers. I’ll start in Amsterdam, a city with more than enough crime, vice and history for a full episode, but after recent King’s Day violence, including a reported shooting in Amsterdam-West and a stabbing near the Kingsland festival at Olympic Stadium, I wanted to step away from the darkness for a moment and find some balance. Five years after Summer Moon-Utah Wells vanished from her home in Hawkins County, Tennessee, this case still remains unsolved. In this episode, we’ll take a fresh look at what the Summer Wells investigation is really about, what has actually happened in the last year, and what the strongest theories look like when you peel back the rumors, focus on the evidence and evaluate search science, child behavior, and investigative protocols. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says the case remains active, the AMBER Alert remains active, and investigators are still working alongside the FBI and the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office. They have also made clear that there is still no publicly identified evidence of abduction but they are making it clear that they have not ruled out any possibility.
