E158 - SPIRITUAL NIRODHA (SN)
CHRISTOPHER LIAM ROSE TALKS ABOUT SPIRITUAL NIRODHA (SN)
Nirodha is a Pali term (Sanskrit: nirodha) translated as "cessation," "extinction," "suppression," or "letting go". It is a central concept in spiritual, particularly Buddhist, practices, representing the end of suffering (dukkha) and the ultimate liberation of nibbana.
Key Aspects of Spiritual Nirodha
- Third Noble Truth: In Buddhism, Nirodha is the third of the Four Noble Truths—the truth of the cessation of suffering, which occurs when craving and attachment are entirely relinquished.
- Renunciation of Craving: It involves the ending of craving (tanha), aversion, and delusion—the three poisons that cause the cycle of suffering.
- Stilling of Mental Formations: Nirodha involves calming the conditioned mind—the mental constructions that create stress—leading to the experience of a "blissful" stillness.
- Nirodha-Samapatti (Attainment of Cessation): A deep meditative state where conscious experience, feeling, and perception completely cease. It is often described as a temporary "turning off" of consciousness that can be accessed by advanced meditators, lasting up to several days.
- Nirvana (Nibbana): The ultimate, permanent attainment of nirodha, often equated with the end of all conditioning and suffering.
- Application in Daily Life: While often associated with deep meditation, nirodha is applied in everyday life through mindfulness, allowing practitioners to recognize and let go of craving and clinging as they arise.
