Summary
According to the Puranas, Brahma looked upon his own created daughter, Shatarupa, with an improper gaze, which revealed his pride and attachment. Seeing this, Lord Shiva became angry and cut off Brahma’s fifth head so that his arrogance could be destroyed. Because of this act, Lord Shiva incurred the sin of Brahmahatya (the killing of Brahma), and Brahma’s severed skull stuck to Shiva’s hand.
