Taryn Smith, the first solo American woman to row across the Atlantic—3,000 miles in 46 days—is lighting the torch for Nebraska’s 42nd Cornhusker State Games. A former track and field competitor from Omaha who competed in the games in 2013, she’s now returning as the ceremonial torchbearer. The free opening night ceremony, featuring Miss USA Audrey Eckert and Governor Jim Pillen, kicks off Thursday at 7 PM outside Pinnacle Bank Arena, with the Nebraska Air National Guard escorting the torch relay to its climax: Taryn igniting the cauldron. Enjoy free ice cream from Hiland Dairy and watch live on TV or stream. The games, running July 9–19, welcome athletes of all ages and skill levels across track, field, cornhole, chess, and more—celebrating Nebraska’s spirit of sports and community.
