  • The Mummy (1999)
    Jun 30 2026

This week on the Fear of God we fill in a long overdue blind spot, not only for coverage on the show but also for Reed's specific viewing catalogue. For years, it has been a running gag on the show that Reed had never watched the 1999 action-adventure take on the classic Mummy tale starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, directed by Stephen Sommers.

Well, that long-standing error has been corrected this week as we bring together a host of regular FoGgers including Vera Goudie, Jocee Worley, and Matt Murray to discuss this film's longstanding appeal and why it still remains so resonant among fans today.

It's a brisk and fun episode this week but still stuffed with thoughtful observations and nostalgic personal anecdotes. We hope you have as much fun as we did discussing it!

  • 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
    Jun 23 2026

This week, we revisit a franchise that has seen not only a fresh pair of installments, but a refreshed resonance to cultural themes. Filmed directly after 28 Years Later, THE BONE TEMPLE picks up where the previous film left off with Spike (Alfie Williams) now having been integrated into the cultish and terrifying group led by "Sir" Jimmy Crystal (in a haunting performance by Jack O'Connell). They make their way across the landscape, slaughtering the infected and offering a hideous "charity" to any passersby they encounter.

But when the group intersects with the benevolent Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), a confrontation is staged that will position belief, purpose, and the very essence of humanity at odds with malice, deceit, and cruelty. The film points a grim eye towards our darkest nature and unearths a disarming capacity for redemption. Nathan is joined again by Kate Micham (who guested with him discussing 28 Years Later) for an exploration of the film's rich themes and the ways it informs the too-little discussed discipline of discernment.

Also featuring a Patron-only chat about the Apple TV hit series WIDOW'S BAY, this is a brisk and thoughtful conversation that we really hope you enjoy.

  • Martyrs (2008)
    Jun 9 2026

In our penultimate episode of #speakingintongues, we tackle one of the most brutally controversial films of the past 20 years, and possibly of all time. Directed by Pascal Laugier, MARTYRS is an unflinching portrait of trauma, pain, despair, violence, and terror, laced together with questions of belief, grief, reality, and purpose. Controversial from its creation -- written in a state of deep depression -- to its release, Martyrs is often cited as the kind of film that maybe goes too far, even if it's still too compelling to completely dismiss.

It's just Nathan and Reed this week as we discuss this haunting film, which carries our strongest of cautions for viewer discretion. Also featuring a lengthy Patron-only discussion of DARK, Season 3, Episode 7, we hope you find this conversation as thoughtful and enjoyable as we did.

  • The Devil's Bath
    Jun 2 2026

Our #speakingintongues series covering international language films is nearly to its close, but not before we stop by 18th century rural Austria for a harrowing and emotionally devastating examination of a horror story rooted -- terrifyingly so -- in actual history. THE DEVIL'S BATH is the third film by directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz to be covered on the FoG (following Goodnight Mommy and The Lodge). It tells the story of Agnes, newly married, who struggles to navigate her perceived purpose in the world as a wife and (hopefully) a mother. But as her husband's absent affections confuse her and her daily duties overwhelm her and the pressures of the surrounding people oppress her, she begins to slide into what the locals call "the devil's bath" -- or what we might call depression.

In that era, the Catholic church condemned suicide as a mortal and irredeemable sin. People who deeply desired to die but did not wish to be sent to hell found a hideous loophole: they would murder someone (often an innocent child) and then confess the crime so that they could be executed following confession and forgiveness. This "suicide by proxy" is documented more than 400 times in this era and this film leans heavily upon historical record for its story. To help us discuss this potent film, we're joined by friend of the show JR Forasteros and his fellow Don't Split Up podcast host (and new FoGger) Adriana Mezquitti.

Our episode also features a Patron-only segment (with guest Andrew Nelson) discussing DARK, Season 3, Episode 6. The film, although quite heavy, has moments of profound compassion and a deeply centered humanity. It presents for us a rich conversational opportunity that also has the laughter and thoughtful asides you've come to expect from us. We really hope you're safe and well and we hope you enjoy this week's discussion.
