About this listen

Colin Salmon and Stephen Fry star in this brand new adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic Sherlock Holmes adventure, The Hound of the Baskervilles, reinterpreted as a dark folk horror by best-selling authors George Mann and Cavan Scott.

An ancient curse has awoken on Dartmoor, the members of the Baskerville family hunted by a spectral hound of Hell. With Sherlock Holmes busy in London, Doctor John Watson is sent to protect the new lord of the manor as fear and superstition run wild in the ancient countryside. Can Watson overcome his own terror to discover the truth behind the legend before the hound strikes again?

Overall this was very enjoyable - the (original) story is of course excellent and the performances here are very good. But what I found to be irritating and unnecessary was the introduction of a new character - the Wise Old Woman - that was nonsense.

Don't Mess With a Classic!

I know that a different interpretation of this story may not be to everyone's taste. however I found it atmospheric and exciting, I was gripped from the start to finnish. the production quality is excellent not too much sound effects but just enough to enhance the atmosphere . After listing to Mr Fry read the whole sherlockian cannon I was expecting him to portray Holmes, but was pleasantly surprised to hear him play Watson with a real warmth , placing Watson firmly at the heart of this story. Colin Salmon was excent too, as are all supporting cast simply one of the best audiobooks I have listened to. Please can we have more adaptations from this team.

I’m sure they’ll be some who’ll think this adaptation of the original isn’t great but I’ve been a reader/listener of all things Holmes since I was a child,(a very long time ago), and I enjoyed it immensely.
Stephen Fry, a man with a huge knowledge regarding Holmes, is superb as Dr. Watson and the cast bring this new version very much to life.
I’d most definitely recommend this audiobook.

A new slant on a classic.

This is an excellent production. The story is told in a fresh way, with lively performances and with voices that are different enough that there is no problem distinguishing who is speaking at any point. The sound effects are very clever: you really feel part of the story. Colin Salmon and Stephen Fry make a very engaging Holmes and Watson and the addition of Meera Syal is a very clever device for the story.
I really hope they reunite this team for more productions as I would happily listen to Sherlock Holmes' other adventures in their company!

Brilliant
