Picture this: September 8, 1941. In the city of Leningrad — formerly Petrograd, formerly Saint Petersburg, Russia's second city and one of the great cultural capitals on earth — a thirteen-year-old girl named Tanya Savicheva goes about her day. School has been suspended. Her father is dead. Outside the apartment windows, the city does not yet fully understand what it has just become. German forces of Army Group North have reached the southern shores of Lake Ladoga, sealing the last overland route out of the city. For the first time in the war, the ring around Leningrad is complete.
