He was for many years a folk devil, almost an apparition, whispered about in playgrounds and used as a threat by parents, in the North West of England anyway, to make their chldren behave - 'Purple Aki's gonna get you'. He became an almost Bogeyman, and around the North West ok the UK, he has an almost legendary status.

But - he was very, very real, and this time around on the Enthusiast, I bring you the tale of a strange individual who had a fetish that you, when you hear about it, would almost make you smirk.

Until I tell you, that it was a fetish that led to the loss of at least one life.

The Justice and Mental Health services in the UK are, as much as they are supposed to for the benefit of the patient concerned, supposed to act dilligently and communicatively in the best interests of the wider public too. One morning in October 2011, 58 year old grandmother of two Sally Hodkin was to find out, in the most tragic of ways, that sometimes, there are failings in these systems...

I found the TCEP a couple of months ago and have managed to listen to almost all of them! This podcast has, as with all others, been researched and presented, as always, brilliantly. I’d never heard of this ‘crime’, it fascinated and repulsed me due to its nature. Thank you for an in depth ‘look’ at what has been and will continue due to human nature. Brilliant narration too.

I've listened to a lot of true crime podcasts and this is one of the best. great cases; well selected and curated, fantastic research, great format and presentation, no annoying fluff and filler.

Am working my way through the back catalogue of TCE podcasts, and finding them very interesting, carefully researched, and brilliantly presented. Most of the cases (almost exclusively from the UK) are not so well known, and Paul's style is very down-to-earth, but, crucially, respectful of the victims. He tells of their lives and stories as well as their demise.

Also. I agree with him about Crimewatch UK!

Interesting cases, brilliantly presented

I really like the presenter and the way he sets out the show. No endless waffle, interesting and well researched material. I’ve listened to some cases which I’ve never heard about and this seems to be the norm. Just an incredibly good podcast and podcastor….well worth a listen. Oh the cat tinkles his bell in the back ground…

Absolutely excellent
