In 1974, a fire tore through São Paulo’s Joelma Building, killing nearly two hundred people and leaving thirteen victims so badly burned they could never be identified. Buried together at São Pedro Cemetery, they became known as As Treze Almas (the Thirteen Souls) and over time, their grave became a place of prayer and offerings.

France, 1634. In the walled town of Loudun, a group of nuns began to scream, convulse, and claim they were tormented by unseen forces. They said demons spoke through them, twisted their bodies, and named the man responsible.

What followed was not just an exorcism, but a public spectacle of fear, obsession, and vengeance that would end in fire.

Because in Loudun, the question was never simply whether the devil had arrived. It was who stood to gain from everyone believing he had.

There are stories that belong to old forests, stories tied to ruined churches, and stories whispered beside fires long after midnight. They feel ancient, as though they have always existed, passed from one voice to another until nobody remembers where they truly began. But every so often, a legend is born somewhere much newer.

This one came from the early internet, back when websites were crude, pages loaded slowly, and strangers wrote things online with no easy way to know if any of it was true. In 2001, a man calling himself Ted began posting updates to a simple website about a narrow cave passage he and a friend were trying to force open. At first it read like an ordinary climbing journal. Then it became something else.

There are certain places that gain a reputation so dark that even years later people still speak of them carefully. Not because they are ancient castles or abandoned asylums, but because something real happened there. Something so disturbing that fact and legend began to merge.

Outside the city of Ibadan, beside the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, there was once a stretch of woodland many travellers barely noticed. Cars passed it every day. Buses rolled by in clouds of dust and heat. Motorcycles wove between traffic while roadside life carried on as normal.

To most people, it was just another patch of trees.

To others, it was somewhere to avoid after dark.
