We often wonder if God has a plan. But we often don’t want to wait to see it. How do we wait on the Lord with faithfulness and patience?

God tells Habakuk to be patient. There are three things we can learn from this passage. 1) We have to wait patiently. 2) We have to wait perspectively and 3) We have to wait Christocentrically.

When we seek to live out of the love of Christ who was patient and brave for us, we can live by faith with patience, and even bravery when we can’t see God’s plan clearly.

What do you do when everything seems to be going wrong in your life?

Habakuk sees everything going wrong for his culture. He sees a military threat coming — disaster is coming for his nation. He cries out to God. He is honest before God and he is also realistic. He sees terrible times full of trouble and disaster and he can’t understand why God would allow it.

But he closes his lament with the words “you will live forever.” He recognizes that it is not for us to determine why God allows certain things to happen, but to steward the time we have well, no matter the circumstances. Listen to what it means to truly see that we have a God of grace.

The promise of Psalm 91 is that God will keep you safe. But how do we understand that promise?

I can tell you what Satan wants you to think about this promise. Because in Luke 4, Satan cites this psalm when he’s tempting Jesus in the wilderness. Satan tries to get a Christian to believe that “If I’m a Christian, God won’t let any really, really bad things happen to me.”

That’s not at all what Psalm 91 is saying. Let’s look at this psalm and three other scriptures and ask, “What does it mean?”

Psalm 46 is a very famous psalm, and an eloquent psalm for times of fear and anxiety. It talks about earthly cities, which can be besieged and destroyed—and it contrasts that with the city of God, which cannot be destroyed. Psalm 11 is an excellent psalm for panicky times. In it, advisors have come to King David and said, “You have to get out of town. There’s going to be a coup.” David, however, knows the worst thing he can do for his people is to flee. So he refuses to panic. And in this psalm, David explains how he’s able to avoid panic: with 1) a reason for the mind and 2) a reason for the heart.
