Growing up as a Punjabi in 1970s regional Australia, Narinder Singh reflects on her family’s migration journey that began when her father arrived in 1956. Her parents married in Cairns in 1965, building a life in Far North Queensland while holding closely to their faith, language and traditions. Narinder recalls balancing Punjabi life at home with Australian life at school, saying, 'As children, we were woken up quite early at home to listen to kirtan and paath records,' traditions she came to appreciate more deeply as she grew older. Now a parent herself, she says she has learnt to “merge” both identities while passing on values of community, honesty and Sikh traditions to her children. - ਨਰਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ 'ਨਿੰਦੇ' ਨੇ ਇਸ ਇੰਟਰਵਿਊ ਰਾਹੀਂ 1970ਵੇ ਦੇ ਦਹਾਕੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਰੀਜਨਲ ਆਸਟ੍ਰੇਲੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਪੰਜਾਬਣ-ਅਸਟਰੇਲੀਅਨ ਵਜੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਤਜੁਰਬੇ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਖੂਬੀ ਬਿਆਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਜਲਦੀ ਉਠਾ ਕੇ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਠ ਦੀਆਂ ਰਿਕਾਰਡਿੰਗਾਂ ਸੁਣਾਈਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਵੱਡੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਵਧੀਕ ਸਮਝ ਆਈ। ਅੱਜ ਇੱਕ ਮਾਂ ਵਜੋਂ ਉਹ ਕਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਸਟ੍ਰੇਲੀਆਈ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਪਹਿਚਾਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ 'ਮਿਲਾਉਣਾ' ਸਿੱਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਮਾਨਦਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਦਰਾਂ ਸਿਖਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਜਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਈ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਆਸਟ੍ਰੇਲੀਅਨ ਰਹਿਣੀ-ਬਹਿਣੀ 'ਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁੱਕਦੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਆਸਟ੍ਰੇਲੀਅਨ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਹੋਣ ਵਜੋਂ 'ਸਭ ਕੁੱਝ ਸਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।'
